If you really think about it, self-improvement is just another form of happiness.
And who doesn’t want to be happy?
Apparently, a lot of people!
Because every time I give a talk on “Ways Your Bathroom Can Change Your Life“, I get all sorts of angry tweets and emails from people who think I’m judging them for not being perfect.
Here’s the thing: I’m not judging anyone. I’m simply sharing what works for me. And if it works for me, it can work for other people too.
Believe it or not, there are several ways that your bathroom can have a positive impact on your daily routine.
The bathroom is often the most neglected space in the house, but it may be the most important one for self-improvement. This is because it is in this room that we have our closest encounters with ourselves. It is here that we confront our own shortcomings and face our fears.
This is one of the very few places where we are away from electronic screens and the constant barrage of distractions. It is a place where we can be alone with our thoughts, and it is a space where we are forced to confront our own reflections.
During my high school days, my family used to tease me about why I spent so much time in the bathroom. Little did they know that it was my thinking room, my sanctuary, and the place where I did some of my best work.
My reply to them was always straightforward- “Bathroom is my best thinking place” for which they mostly gave a blank look.
If you’re not using your bathroom for self-improvement, then you’re missing out on a powerful opportunity.
So, here are nine ways that your bathroom can change your life for the better:
1. It can be a place to relax and unwind
Nobody bothers you when you’re in the bathroom, so it can be a great place to relax and unwind after a long day. Take a warm bath, light some candles, and let all your troubles melt away.
If you don’t have a bathtub, no problem! Just take a long shower and let the hot water wash over you. This is a great way to relax your muscles and clear your mind. Add some soothing aromatherapy or a relaxing playlist, and you have the perfect recipe for de-stressing.
You can also use this time to reflect on your day and think about what went well and what you could improve upon. This is valuable introspection that can help you grow as a person.
Of course, the bathroom is also a great place to unwind in other ways. A nice soaking tub can be very relaxing, and there’s nothing quite like a good book in the tub.
2. It can be a place to think and reflect
You can also use this time to brainstorm creative solutions to problems you’re facing. Sometimes the best ideas come when you’re not actively trying to think of them. So, take a break from trying to force solutions and let your mind wander. You may be surprised at the ideas that come to you in the bathroom.
If you’re facing a difficult decision, this is also a great place to reflect on all the options and think about what is best for you. You can’t always control the outcome of a situation, but you can control how you react to it.
Take some time in the bathroom to think about your options and make a decision that is best for you. This is an important life skill that will help you in all areas of your life.
3. Use a vision board to set goals
The bathroom mirror is a great place to set goals for yourself. Staring at yourself in the mirror each day can help you to focus on what you want to achieve.
You can write your goals down on a piece of paper and stick it to the mirror, or even better, create a vision board. A vision board is a collection of images and words that represent what you want to achieve.
Creating a vision board in your bathroom can help to keep you motivated and focused on your goals. It can also be a great way to visualize the life you want to create for yourself.
If you’re not sure how to create a vision board, here is a great example.
4. It can be a place to practice affirmations
Affirmations are positive statements that help to change your mindset. Repeating them in the bathroom mirror can help to reprogram your subconscious mind for success.
Some examples of affirmations that you can use in the bathroom mirror are:
- I am healthy and happy.
- I am abundant and prosperous.
- I love myself unconditionally.
- I am worthy of love and respect.
- I am confident and successful.
You can also create your own affirmations that are specific to your goals and desires. The important thing is to believe them and repeat them often.
Affirmations are a powerful tool that can help you to change your life for the better. If you’re not using them already, I highly recommend you start today.
5. It can be a place to visualize your dreams
Did you know that your brain can’t tell the difference between reality and imagination? This means that you can use visualization to achieve your goals.
When you visualize yourself achieving your dreams, your brain starts to believe it is possible and starts working on making it a reality.
So, in the bathroom, take some time to close your eyes and visualize yourself achieving your wildest dreams. The more detailed you can make the visualization, the better.
See yourself in your mind’s eye achieving everything you’ve ever wanted. Visualize it in as much detail as possible.
What does it feel like?
What does it look like?
Who is there with you?
What are you wearing?
The more realistic you can make the visualization, the better.
Wanna know how I do this?
I stand below the shower with the water running down my chest and head, and I close my eyes and visualize what it would feel like to have already achieved my goal.
I see myself in as much detail as possible. I feel the emotions of happiness, joy, love, and gratitude. I am surrounded by family and friends who are congratulating me. We are all celebrating my success.
Take a few minutes each day to close your eyes and visualize yourself achieving your goals. Give it a try and see how it affects your life.
6. It can be a place to plan your day
You can make great things happen every day when you plan your day well. When you take the time to think about what you want to achieve for the day, you are more likely to make it happen.
In the morning, before you start your day, you should spend a few minutes in the bathroom. Stand in front of the mirror and tell yourself what you are going to achieve that day.
At the end of the day, go back to your mirror, and take a few minutes to think about how your day went. Did you achieve everything you set out to do? If not, why not?
Talk to yourself, be honest, and be grateful for the things you did achieve. Then make a new plan for the next day.
So, start each day by standing in front of the mirror and telling yourself what you are going to achieve. Then, at the end of the day, take a few minutes to reflect on how your day went.
This simple habit can have a big impact on your life and help you to achieve your goals.
7. It can be a place to celebrate your successes
Whenever you achieve a goal, take a moment to celebrate in the bathroom!
When you take the time to celebrate your successes, it reminds you that you are capable of achieving great things. This will help to keep you focused and motivated on your goals.
Pamper yourself when you are celebrating your success. Whatever makes you feel good, do it- use luxurious bathing products, listen to your favourite music, read a book in your hot tub, or just take a long, relaxing bath.
This simple habit can have a big impact on your life and help you to achieve bigger goals.
So, next time you achieve something, take a moment to stand in front of the mirror and give yourself a big pat on the back! Congratulate yourself out loud. Feel the emotions of pride and happiness.
8. It can be a place to focus on your health
The bathroom is a great reminder to take care of your body. Every time you use the bathroom, you are reminded of the importance of taking care of your health.
When you take a shower, think about how good it feels to have a clean and healthy body.
- What can you do today to make sure you are moving your body enough and getting the exercise you need?
- What can you do today to make sure you are getting the nutrients your body needs?
- What can you do today to make sure you are drinking enough water?
- What can you do today to make sure you are getting enough sleep?
- What can you do today to make sure you are taking care of your mental health?
9. It can be a place to connect with your spiritual side
Many people find that they feel more connected to their spirituality in the bathroom. This is because it is a private space where you can spend time in silence.
You can use the bathroom as a place to connect with your spiritual side. Spend a few minutes each day in silence, focusing on your breath. Listen to the sounds of the water running and the air moving. Allow yourself to feel peaceful and connected to something bigger than yourself.
The bathroom is a powerful space for self-improvement, so make sure to use it to your advantage! Implement some of these tips, and you’ll be well on your way to achieving your goals.
Keep it clean and organised
Take some time to declutter and organize your bathroom. This will help you feel calmer and more capable of taking on the day. A well-organised space can also help you save time and reduce stress.
When you have a tidy bathroom, it’s easier to relax and feel good about yourself. Plus, you’ll be able to find everything you need when you need it! So take some time to declutter your bathroom and get rid of anything that doesn’t serve a purpose.
Bathroom Enhancement Tips
1. Get a comfortable chair
Having a chair in the bathroom that’s comfortable enough to sit in for a while will make your routine much more relaxing. You can use it to read, meditate, or just take a break from standing.
If you don’t have enough space for a full-sized chair, consider getting a small stool or ottoman. Anything that makes your bathroom more comfortable will help you to enjoy spending time there.
Comfortable seating is one of the most important bathroom enhancement tips because it allows you to fully relax in the space.
2. Add some plants
Not only do plants look pretty, but they also have tons of health benefits. Try adding some spider plants or succulents to your bathroom for some extra oxygen and freshness.
3. Install a sound system
A good sound system can really transform a bathroom into a relaxing oasis. Whether you want mellow background music or ambient sounds, add what works best for you!
There are many wireless portable Bluetooth speakers on the market that are waterproof and can be controlled with your smartphone. (I use JBL Boombox in my bathroom and JBL Extreme in the living room.)
4. Get rid of clutter
Clutter makes any space feel smaller and less welcoming, so take the time to get rid of anything you don’t need in the bathroom.
A few storage solutions like baskets or racks can help keep things neat and organized.
5. Install shelving or cabinets in your bathroom
If you find yourself constantly searching for toiletry items or towels, try installing some shelving or cabinets to give yourself some extra storage space.
This will also help keep everything organized and easy to find when you need it.
6. Hang up some artwork
Adding artwork is a great way to personalize your bathroom and make it feel more like home. Choose a few pieces that reflect your style and make you feel happy when you see them.
These are just a few ideas to get you started on enhancing your bathroom space. Remember, the sky’s the limit! Use your imagination and make the space work for you.
The bottom line is that your bathroom is a powerful space for self-improvement. By taking the time to make it a place that you enjoy being in, you’ll be setting yourself up for success in all areas of your life.
